May 28 Villarmentero de Campos to Calzadilla de la Cueza

Villarmentero de Campos 6:15am
No 5am rising by anyone today. I awoke at 5:30 and lay in my bunk until others stirred a bit after 6am. I hate to think how much alcohol I had yesterday. As well as the wine and beer before dinner and the wine with dinner there was the fire water potion the guy here made twice. It has so much alcohol in it that it burnt for minutes while he stirred it then put in fruit and coffee beans for a pretty good tasting concoction. My right foot is still sore. I kicked the table during dinner and it really hurt. The blister on the heel is now huge. It may be time for something more than tape. I thought yesterday I felt it burst while I was walking but it keeps growing. 25km is about my maximum distance today. Problem is that Carrion de Conde is about 10km away snd then there is a long gap with no hostels - and I would expect a fairly full one at the other end . The last 2 nights away from the big soulless hostels has been great. I sat around the campfire with the youngsterd last night. They were using marijuana and as high as kites. Very different from the atmosphere at San Nicholas but still good to be part of.

Carrion de los Condes 10:15am
I have Internet for the first time in days . Mike Wilson sent me some photos of the dogs. Really nice to see them. I've spent ages over breakfast reading emails so I need to move soon as it is 17km to go today - probably 4 hours to the next town which is where I will stay tonight. Trying to keep the speed down today as I think that has been causing the pain. I still got here in 2 hours. The weather isn't so good today - cloudy with occasional light showers and I'm feeling a little melancholy.

Calzadilla de la Cueza 3:30pm
Just spent an hour catching up on email. The last part of the walk was pretty hard mentally - 11km along an old roman road with very few corners just a little up and down for variation. The road has been widened so two cars can pass so I don't know how much of the original road remains underneath. There was 1 very large truck going backwards and forwards along the road collecting hay . At least it went slowly as people had to get off the road to let it pass. One heavy shower and lots of little ones but in total the rain is only 1 or 2 mm. There was a thunder storm to the east (behind me) about half an hour before arriving herr. There was a young German woman Jessica walking in her sandals as her boots hurt her feet and with a huge pack . She wouldn't let me carry it. She started in Burgos and I thought she wouldn't last long but I have seen her evrty dsy dince then (3 days). I can't work out how to save the photos Mike sent me on the phone so I can show everyone.

The thunder storm came through at 4:15. Quiet a few peregrinos still on the Camino.
