Walked by Mike 1056.9km by Idol 664.1km by Toby 432.6km Funds raised $11,320
I want to stat by saying a huge thank you to my colleagues at ANZ IT Cards Programme in Wellington who today held a bake sale in support of my walk and raised a whopping $928.80. Here is the table with Brigitte and Pankaj
And here is a photo of the money they collected in the first hour - looks almost as good as the cakes to me
I have to say I was a little disorganised today and suddenly found it 8am and I was still sitting at Kein and Bronwen's house. In the last minute rush I left my wallet behind so had to borrow some cash from the bucket to buy food. Chris from Manawatu Cancer Society drove to my start point. I was 15 minutes late hitting the road and just got later all day finishing up 55minutes behind schedule.
Both dogs walked with me from the start and through town. Idol was looking very stiff initially but loosened up after 10 minutes and was much happier once we were on smooth footpaths. First stop was Terrace end branch where I had an interview with a reporter. Then out onto the street for most of the staff for a photo
The supposedly 20 minute walk to Palmerston North branch took much longer as I was successful in collecting a few donations. A cup of tea at Palmerston North - and some donated treats for the dogs and then photo time again. You will notice that Toby is treating the camera with disdain and concentrating on pats from Jills.
A few yards along the road to Cuba & Rangitikei St for a quick chat and another photo.Once again Toby is concentrating on getting patted.
After this I grabbed some lunch to eat later and then headed across the square where Toby found some children on holiday from Hawaii to pat him and down Fitzherbert Ave where Martyn from Manawatu Cancer Society wa waiting for me with the car. Idol was put into the car and Toby walked on with me on his own. This is the first time Toby has walked a full day.
I deviated along the edge of the Massey campus and gained an extra $10 or so for my efforts. After this it was off the footpath and onto the road for the final 8km to Linton. Toby was trying to walk on my left (the traffic side) at first and when I got him back onto the left he was trying to steer me out towards the middle of the road - where the bitumen chips are more worn down. After a couple of km he settled down and walked nicely - apart from one attempt to get to the lambs in a paddock, and a later barking at nosy cattle.
For the last 2km the road is narrower as it will be tomorrow. Very pleased with a milk tanker driver who slowed down till traffic coming the other way had passed and then crossed the centre line. Alas I don't get the same courtesy from car drivers many of whom consider it an affront to slow down and will move towards the edge if a truck is coming the other way.
Among the things I have driven past many times without noticing is this horse trough at Linton.
Only 150km to go.
