Tours 4 May

Looking at yesterday's blog I can see I was tired. Nothing said about how I was feeling  - just what I did. It wasa long day - as was today - and quite frankly by the time I got to Blois I was bored with castles.  I found the walking tour of the town much more interesting and I wish I had skipped the castle.

I was also feeling very sorry for Penny who has lost her dog Haze.  I think Penny when they were dishing out good luck you were in the other queue.

Also I didn't mention the baby in the restaurant last night -  and again this morning for breakfast.  She kept holding her food out to me (bread both times) and pulled her hand away when I asked if it was for me.  Played some lovely games of peek-a-boo.  The Auberge de Rambage was a great stay - wrorked out at about 70 euros a night for dinner bed and breakfast so I can't afford to stay like that every night.  Tonight is Ibis Budget Hotel in Tours - rather sterile and no contact with the other guests but that is what budget accomodation is like.  I've been trying to find the french equivalent of the backpackers hostels that are ubiquitious in New Zealand, cheap, and plenty of socialistion - no success.

Today was a boys day out.  First of all a cross country excursion to Le Mans.  I saw some livestock - a place that does horse rides had 2 old nags in a paddock. There are vast quantities of lupins being grown throughout the Loire Valley so I presume there is some livestock in barns somewhere that is eating it. Also saw my first road kill today -  an unidentified bird fairly large. Actually I have seen very few birds in the country side other than crows. I do wonder what french farmers are doing that makes bird life so scarce.

At Le Mans I visited the Le Mans 24 hour museum that has a large collection of cars - mostly french but a selection of Bentleys Ferraris and Jaguars - and even a Ford and a Cadillac.I didn't know there were Cadillac racing cars.   Then it was off to  Tours - so  I long trip to finish up 30km from where I started this morning.

I didn't appreciate how drawn out lunch is in France.  I had 2 and 1/2 hours and a 1 hour trip for the boat ride so I stopped at a restaurant for lunch.  I don't think I had any choice - I didn't find an open boulangerie all day.  By the time I got on the road I was going to be 3 minutes late for the ferry so a bit of lead foot was required to get there on time.  Fortunately the roads were very quite.

The boat trip was a bit pedestrian.  Didn't see any beavers, which was why I took the trip, but went past 2 islands where they live.  Other than the swallows catching insects over the river the wild life was thin -  a few grey herons and a white heron.

I decided to go for a walk along the river. 3.5km each way from Rochecorbon to Vouvray.  I'm going to pick things up a bit as the 7km took 2 hours.

A message for those who insist that tourism needs the shops open 24/7 - I couldn't even buy an ice cream in Vouvray as the town was shut - several places selling wine along the way however. I only stopped at one.  I don't think it is fair to sample the wares when I know I won't be buying.

I'm sure I should add a picture of a Bentley to this but its nearly 11pm and I need to sleep.

Au Revoir.
