Viana - Ventosa 20 May.

7:45AM
Went to dinner, mass and then coffee and brandy returning to the albergue about 15 min before it closed.  A stork flew over the town quite low. For the others it was ho hum but it is the first one I have seen close. It was very hot and I didn't sleep well last night. My Dutch companions where out of the albergue by the time I was ready. I expected them to have gone to breakfast and I looked for a place open for breakfast without success. I found a bakery and bought some croissants which I am eating now.  I felt guilty about walking off from the angel of my dreams without saying goodbye to her.  Later I discovered that she had gone ahead of me.

A little cool this morning.  It is overcast but I hope it warms up. Ventosa is just over 30km so I will need to keep moving if I am going to make it.

In Logrono I need to find someone who can sort out my phone- a brief local call and 3 txts to New Zealand and about 13euro in credit is gone. I feel a wee bit alone in the world right now.

Outskirts of Logrono 9am. 2 new blisters on the toes of my right foot.

I have arrived at Logrono cathedral just before mass at 10am. The chapel which is just one wing of the cathedral is 8 sided. It is truly ornate with a painted ceiling going up to an 8 sided cupola that looks tiny from here but probably isn't. There are 3 magnificent stained glass windows and statues everywhere. A photo can't capture the essence of this place so I won't even try.

Ventosa 9pm
Things are looking up. I found someone at the phone company in Logrono who spoke English - now the phone plan is set up correctly and calls to NZ won't cost a fortune. The phone will still be switched off most of the time. Leaving Logrono I wanted to go to the toilet but I couldn't find one. The track to the lake and the lake itself are very popular so no just going behind a bush. It was 6km before I found one. I bought some fruit in Logrono and had that for lunch after I finally found the toilet.  Then nearly 11km to Ventosa without a rest stop. I met a couple from Finland. He uses a guide dog although not completely blind. She was pushing a buggy with 2 children- both fortunately very small but this will be there last walking trip until the children are big enough to walk. When I went to have a shower I found a large raised welt on my leg from the chaffing and blood on my underwear. I have decided to have a shorter day tomorrow just 24km.
