According to the route notes it was 40.3km but it took longer than I planned and I have 10% more steps than yesterday - 57134. Google Maps still insists on 40.3km. So either I was taking smaller steps or Google Maps was wrong. Fridays total for 43.6km was 59170 so the distance was a little longer than Google says. But I will keep the official total at 40.3 so that the overall distance walked and therefore the target doesn't have to change.
I have now raised 10% of the target.
The start was at 8am at ANZ Kaiapoi. The staff were waiting to see me off. Sue McKee and Res walked with me from Kaiapoi to Rangiora. 6km from Rangiora 4 of the staff from ANZ Rangiora, Mike, Dinah, Samantha and Andrenna met us. A little further along Norma Wilson joined the walk while Bruce drove along stopping regularly to take photos.
Things were going to schedule until we got into Rangiora. Somehow while walking through the town we lost 15 minutes from the timetable. ANZ Rangiora had prepared a morning tea. Savouries, sausage rolls and yummy biscuits. They had also put information about my walk on the community noticeboard. That brought in 2 or 3 donations from people who had seem it on the board and then stopped to give donation when they saw us on the road. Rowena from Ashley also joined me for a few kilometres from near the school to her home.
It was hard to get away from the branch and by the time I did i was 30 minutes late.
Paul & I had lunch at Sefton pub. Paul went ahead and ordered before I arrived so I didn't have to wait very long for the food. I arrived 5 minutes behind timetable but the time I had eaten I was 45 minutes late. 200m down the road some of the children for Sefton School were waiting to greet me. One of the girls was called Ella and was delighted to pat a dog with the same name.
Paul was fantastic on support again today. He reappeared regularly throughout the day. He also scouted the route ahead and let me know how far to go every time we met. The notes are definitely out for the distance from Kowhai River to Grays Rd. I had 0.5km but it was 2.4km.
A photographer from Hurunui News appeared unexpected. I found out tonight that Heather Hood from Waimakariri Dog Training Club had organised it.
By the time I arrived at Amberley at 4pm I was just over an hour late. I was also getting rather tired and had to take a rest. Just 5 minutes. Amberley has lots of local history interpretation signs along the footpath but alas I alas I didn't have time to read them. I reached the end point for today at 5:30 - an hour behind timetable.
Rapid then went to agility training at Waimak. He had half an hours sleep in the van and was ready to go again. I think I should rename him The Energiser Bunny. Waimak people made more donations but these won't get to the bank until I each Blenheim in 8 days.
